Photos From the 6th Komikon at the Starmall Trade Halls

I went with buddies Drew, Kat and Joiz to the 6th Komikon or Komikon 2010,  held last November 13 at the Starmall Trade Hall in Mandaluyong city. The event was graced by featured artists Manix and Jess Abrera, Carlo Pagulayan, Harvey Tolibao and Stephen Segovia. Also seen were Pugad Baboy creator Pol Medina, the Bayan Knights and Point Zero guys.   There were also a lot of indie and local comic books and artists.

First booth I went looking for was the Comic Odyssey booth. Like that's a big surprise. I wanted to dig their 20 peso bins for issues that were on my list ( which I forgot to bring). They had a huge booth at the far end of the hall, which by the way was actually very small so it got really crowded. The 20 peso bins were such a hit, as usual so I really had to wait my turn and also elbow some patrons, as some of them were elbowing their way in, trying to get in without waiting their turn. More on my purchases later. Photos of the con after the jump.

The Hobby Expo at the Riverbanks Center

Last weekend, my toy pals and I decided to hit the Hobby Expo at The Riverbanks Center in Marikina. I was also supposed to meet 2 other friends, but I got there late and by the time I arrived, they were already gone.

First booth I saw even before getting my ticket was a comic book booth which I strongly felt was Comic Odyssey. So I paid for my ticket-- 20 pesos- and made a beeline to the said booth, and surprise, surprise, it was Comic Odyssey! Honestly, I was surprised to see them there because I thought this would be just an all- toy fair. They didn't have a lot of comics to sell  like they did at the recent Komikon ( which I have yet to blog about-- I am seriously backlogged). There were probably just 6 or 8 boxes. So I did what I do best and scoured the boxes and found myself these lovelies:

Filming Underway for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

Still on Marvel movie news, I've learned that Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance has begun filming in Romania. The sequel will still star Nicholas Cage and is being directed Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor. According to Superhero Hype, the film will be released in 3D and 2D on February  17, 2012.

First Look at January Jones as Emma Frost in X-men: First Class

Filming has started for X-men: First Class in the United Kingdom, and the Daily Mail  posted some photos of January Jones in costume as Emma Frost. The blonde Madmen star is seen wearing a a white coat, white boots, and a white fur cap . You'll see more photos here.

Wonder Woman Movie in 2013?

I was on Youtube watching some Justice League clips featuring Wonder Woman when I came across a fan made trailer for a WW feature film. The clip featured Angelina Jolie with scenes from her movies. Seeing this trailer prompted me to Google information on news or progress of the film. One of the first search results that caught my eye was from IMDB. The page is mostly empty except for this bit of information: next to the title "Wonder Woman" is the year 2013.

Is this true? Would we finally be seeing the Amazon princess on the big screen in 3 years?

WHAT?! No Cyke and Jean in X-men: First Class?!?!

Film takes place in the 60's.... shows how Xavier and Magneto met..... costumes will be comic-bookish.. no Cyclops and Jean Grey... Kevin Bacon and Janua....wait.. Whut?! No Cyclops and Jean Grey in X-men: First Class??

Please tell me you're joking.

THE HUNT: Iron and the Maiden 3

Iron and the Maiden was a comic book published by Aspen Comics in 2007 as its first creator-owned title. It was  a four-issue mini-series that was later followed by a one shot. There was also an Iron and the Maiden #0. Written by creator Jason Rubin and pencilled by Francis Manapul, the story revolved around 2 main characters: a sexy young lady out to avenge her father's death and a juiced-up ex-Mafia goon who is out for revenge on the same Mafia he considered his family . It is set in a city in the 1930's, in an alternate universe where the government  is corrupt and the Mafia rules ( hmmmm sounds familiar?). Covers were done by Manapul, but some variants featured artwork by Jeff Matsuda and the late Michael Turner. A trade paperback was released in May of this year.

DC Comics Chuck Taylors!

Here's one more reason to love the good ol' Chuck Taylor. DC Comics has teamed up with Converse and released Chuck Taylor All Star Highs with designs bearing some of our favorite DC characters. These came out I think this month, but the DC folks who manned the booth at the recent SDCC I've learned wore these. I missed out on that bit of info and actually learned about them from  Jim Lee's Twitter.

There are 5 designs in all: 2 Batman designs; 2 Superman and 1 Green Lantern. I hope these become available here in the Philippines because I sure as hell want one! Or two. Okay fine I WANT THEM ALL!

SLG Publishing to release Elmer

This is great news for the Philippine comics industry. Hopefully this will pave the way for more local publications to hit the international market. Congratulations, Gerry Alanguilan!

Press Release

Elmer, the acclaimed graphic novel by Philippine cartoonist Gerry Alanguilan about talking chickens, will finally see print in the United States this November in a new edition released from SLG Publishing. A window into a world where chickens have suddenly acquired the intelligence and consciousness of humans, Elmer tells the story of a family of chickens who struggles to survive in a strange and dangerous world.

While Elmer is basically a book about talking chickens, SLG Publisher Dan Vado says it should not be dismissed as funny animal book. “This is not about talking chickens the way Babe was about talking pigs” Vado observed “Elmer has more in common with Animal Farm than any talking dog movie.”

Creator Gerry Alanguilan has worked in comics for some time on various work-for-hire projects from major publishers, but when casting around for ideas for his own project he looked no further than his own front window ” I’ve always been surrounded by chickens. I find them fascinating and I often found myself wondering what if… what if they could think like us and talk like us?” said Alanguilan “What would they say? What would they do? It was a ridiculous notion, but I tried to approach it very seriously and see what I would come up with.”

Self-publishing the series in The Philippines, Alanguilan’s comic attracted attention internationally for its mirror-like look at the world we live in. Neil Gaiman called it “heartbreaking and funny and so beautifully drawn.”

The SLG Publishing edition of Elmer will contain all of the same material from the self-published version which saw limited distribution outside of the Philippines. Scheduled for a November 2010 release, Elmer will be a 144 page black and white graphic novel priced at $12.95 and will be available at better comics and book shops, from Amazon.com as well as from the publisher’s own website.

The first chapter of the book is available as a free download from the SLG Publishing website (www.slgcomic.com).

COMICS: There's a Justin Bieber Comic Book

First a bio movie and now this. There's also a  Justin Bieber comic book from Bluewater Productions. O_o

COMICS: David Beckham Comic Book From Bluewater Productions

Soccer superstar David Beckham has conquered the sports and fashion world, and is now set to enter the world of comics. This coming September, David Beckham makes his comic book debut in FAME: David Beckham. This is one of Bluewater Production's latest additions to FAME, a biographical comic book series that features famous celebrities. Past issues featured Lady Gaga, Twilight stars Kirsten Stewart, Rob Pattinson and Taylor Lautner.

The book will be written by Pete Rogers and drawn by artist Pablo Martinera. It will feature David's carreer, from how he started out up to his current place as star player for LA Galaxy.

I'm a David Beckham fan but I'm not sure if I'll get this one. But I'd definitely wait on deciding until I've actually perused the comic book. FAME: David Beckham features 2 covers, and is scheduled for release in September. Cover price is $3.99.

HAUL: Factor X #1

Since I was in the Ortigas area yesterday, I decided to stop by SM Megamall to check out the comic and toy shops there. There are 2 comic shops at the basement of building A,  and one of those is Filbar's. I love Filbar's because some branches have bargain bins of comics ranging from 20-90 pesos. Some of the issues go as far back as the early 90's and as recent as 2007/2008.

I was browsing through the bins when I found Factor X #1, from the Age Of Apocalypse series in the 90's. I'm not sure, but I may have picked up this title back when it first came out, along with some other titles from the AoA series. I've already lost/ misplaced all of those in the last 10 years.

I've recently added some of the AoA titles to my "hunt list", and I'm just looking for some issues to complete them. This Factor X #1 is the first one I have in my possession of this title, and I got it for only Php 20.00. Sweet!

I haven't taken it out of the bag yet, but it seems like it's in fairly good condition.

So that's one down and 3 more to go for this title. I wonder if i'll find the other issues at the Metro Comic Con.

GLEE Comics!

Here's something for all you Gleeks out there. Bluewater Productions is giving your favorite show it's very own comic book! This one-shot biographical  comic book will be published under the FAME title and will focus on the lives of the cast and the team behind the hit show. The comic book will retail for $3.99 and is scheduled for release in November.

Visit the Bluewater Productions site for more details.

The Return of Abby van Alstine, The Necromancer

I've been trying to collect the Necromancer ever since I picked up issue #1 at the Php 20 bin at Comic Odyssey. I loved the art of Francis Manapul, and the story itself is very captivating. I guess that's largely in part due to it's supernatural theme, and Lord knows I love anything supernatural.

Tips When Hitting Sales and Conventions

Since the 9th Philippine Toycon is just days away,  I decided to put together a "Survival Guide" of sorts that is based on my personal experience. I've gone to several cons since I've gotten back into comic book collecting, and these tips, which were borne out of trial and error, have helped me get through them. These may not be fool-proof, but these have worked for me so far.

Zenescope To Publish Charmed

TV's hit supernatural drama Charmed is making a comeback-- in comic book form. I've just gotten confirmation by reading on Newsarama that Zenescope Entertainment has acquired the publishing rights for the TV show. OHMYGOD! I LOVE YOU ZENESCOPE!!! Check out the beautiful  cover of the first issue!

Charmed is one of my all-time favorite TV shows, and I think it's about time that a comic book about them gets published. I hope they include my favorite character Prue, who was killed at the end of season 3.

Dave Hoover will be penciling, while the story telling will be shared by Paul Ruditis and Raven Gregory. This comic book series is said to feature a brand new storyline about the Halliwell sisters Piper, Phoebe and Paige--which picks up where the show left off in it's final season. How they're going to do that is actually very interesting, because the final scenes of that series finale showed a very old Piper Halliwell telling the stories of the Charmed Ones to her grand children. That aside, I am so excited to see how this turns out.

Issue #0 comes out this June, and the first issue debuts this July at the San Diego Comic Con.

See the model sheets for the characters here.

Fathom: Blue Descent #0 cover art by Scott Clark

Absaloma is a member of the Blue, searching for answers to his own purpose within the ever-changing landscape under the surface. New Pulls From The 20 Pesos Bin

I was at Market Market last Saturday killing time so I decided to check out one of my favorite comic book stores, Comics N' Stuff. Comic's N' Stuff is a sister store of Comic Odyssey, another favorite store of mine. I love this place because their 20 peso bins are back issue gold mines!

While browsing through the bins, I saw quite a few issues that I almost picked up, but then decided to drop after giving it some thought. There was a Wildcats Vol.1 #4, which I already had in my collection so I don't know why I even thought of buying one. Plus a couple of superman titles, X-man issues- whose covers were painted and looked amazing-- and a few others I can't remember now. After going through all the bins I had 10 comics in hand, but chose to buy only 2. I picked up a Fathom Prelude #1 with a Michael Turner cover and a Red Sonja #0.

Fathom Prelude #1 is set back in the 80's and tells the story of a young Aspen Matthews as she competes in the Olympics as part of the US women's swim team. An incident at the the games marks the end of her swimming career, but paves the way for her love of the deep ocean.

Red Sonja is well Red Sonja. Sexy read head in a two piece chain mail. Need I say more?

And that's my weekend pull.

I Fondled An Ipad

Yes, yes I did. And it felt goooooood!

I went to Mike's studio the other day to join some friends for a day of shooting portraits when I saw an Ipad lying near his computer. I remember Mike saying he was expecting one to arrive around late April. Everyone was excited to get their hands on it, but of course I was the first one to.

I actually dismissed the Ipad as another consumer product of Apple that  has no use for me, but then they teamed up with Marvel Comics. I salivated like crazy.

So yeah, to make the long story short, I fondled and pawed it, and now I am in love.

My preciouuuuuusssssssssssss.
