HAULS: 3 X-Men Comics

A friend of mine gave me these comics one weekend. She found them bundled together at a shop in Cubao, and knowing that I love the X-men, she bought them and gave them to me as an early X-mas present. Bundled in the bag were X-men: Earthfall and X-men/Brood: Day of Wrath 1 & 2. As is evident on the covers, the story of all three books center on the Brood, a parasitic alien race.

X-men: Earthfall is somewhat of a reprint. It collects Uncanny X-men # 232, 233 and 234 into one volume. Penned by Chris Claremont with artwork by Marc Silvestri, X-men Earthfall shows the Uncanny X-men as they battle the Brood who have once again tried to stage an invasion by infecting members of a religious organization, one of whom was infected with a Queen egg. The cover is by Ian Churchill and Al Vey.

X-men/ Brood: Day of Wrath is a special, limited series printed in 2006. The story takes place several years after the events that occurred in X-men Earthfall. It is a follow-up to the story featured in X-men Earthfall and centers on the religious group infected by the Brood, more specifically, the person infected with the Queen Brood egg. The Brood's Queen Mother has ordered the termination of the new Queen on Earth, who has refused to give in to the control of the Brood, and sent a group of elite Brood assassins to do her bidding. The X-men Battle these assassins in order to save the target queen. John Hitch wrote the story, and issue #1 was pencilled by Bryan Hitch. He shared penciller duties with Sal Velutto.

Overall, all three books were a very good read. The three had the feel of God Loves, Man Kills, one of my favorite X-men stories. X-men: Earthfall provided a good start to tale that Day of Wrath finished quite nicely.

EVENTS: Harvey Tolibao's DARE TO DRAW

I love Harvey Tolibao. He's fun, wacky, and an over-all nice guy. And he draws really well, too. The pic above is a sketch  he did in my notebook at the 2011 Toycon last July. He ran out paper so I handed him my notebook for him to sketch on. Incidentally, this is my first sketch by a Marvel Comics artist. XD

Tomorrow, he takes on the public with "DARE To DRAW" at Vinyl+Splash at Fully Booked BHS. Something Harvey Tolibao fans shouldn't miss!

EVENTS: Artists Galore!

Stephen Segovia (right) with Harvey Tolibao at last year's Komikon.

Yesterday was a very busy day for most comic book fans in the metro with two signings and one talk by local, but internationally known, comic book artists.

New comic book store Comicxhub hosted a signing for comic book artists Mico Suayan and Gerry Alanguilan. Photos of the event can be found on their Facebook page. Over at Robinson's Galleria, Comic Odyssey hosted a premiere signing for comic book artist Stephen Segovia for his new  Marvel Comics series: Thor, The Deviant's Saga.

Later in the day, Secret Fresh hosted a talk with industry veteran Tony De Zuniga.

With all that activity, you'd think I would have been dead tired from event hopping. But I wasn't. I never made it to any of the above *facepalms*.

FINDS: Wonder Woman #10 and Catwoman #70

I went to the mall to meet up with some buds to get some stuff and hang out, but a trip to two comic book stores found me spending some dough. I got me these two yesterday: Catwoman 70 and Wonder Woman 10. Both books are part of the Amazon's Attack mini-series which I'm trying to complete. These were bargain finds: Catwoman for Php 30.00 and Wonder Woman for Php 50.00.

Getting these brings me much closer to finally completing the series. All I need now are 2(?) more Catwoman titles and Amazon's Attack #2.

Collecticon 2011 Day 1 Report

Collecticon 2011 was held last weekend at the Robinson's Midtown Mall and some buddies and I decided to trek to Ermita, Manila to check it out during the first day last Saturday. Day 1 wasn't as packed with people as I expected. The selling area was crowded, but still navigable. There were booths selling comics for as low as 10 pesos and graphic novels at 50% off. Obviously  most of the stuff being sold there were toys. There were lot of boxed and loose Marvel and DC toys, as well as Gundams and other Japanese anime toys.I also saw a booth that sold costumes and wigs; a dog tag booth and one that sold collectibles like Coca-Cola memorabilia.

I.Am.Evil.

67 %... that's a huge difference!

I chanced upon this interesting quiz while browsing Zenescope's website. I'm a sucker for online quizzes. I can spend hours browsing through quiz sites and answering quizzes that range from 1-question types to those that span several pages long.

Accordign to the site:

"There are only 2 sides in the world: GOOD vs. EVIL. You belong to one. But which one? Take the survey to find out..."

Which I did. And it turns out that I'm EVIL.*insert evil laugh here.*  What about you? Which side are YOU on? Go ahead and take the quiz to find out.

Super Heroes For Your Feet

Speaking of Superman, check out what I got at the mall:

Superman flipflops! It's Php 150.00 per pair and I think only comes in black. There are three other similar designs with the Flash, GL, and Batman . There are also two or three Wonder Woman designs, but those are only for the ladies. The male characters are also only in men's sizes. Still thinking if I should get the other three.

TOYCON 2011

It started out as a small gathering of collectors wanting to sell, swap and share their collections in 2002 in a small function room of SM Megatrade. Today, The Philippine Toys, Hobbies and Collectibles Convention is the biggest of it's kind in the country.

Last weekend, a presscon for the 10th Philippine Toys, Hobbies and Collectibles Convention or TOYCON, which is now on its tenth year, was held at the function room of Eurotel in Malate. Friends from the press and online media were present as Mr.Vic Yap and Mr.Cholo Malilin talked about what we could expect from this year's TOYCON.

Vic Yap and  Cholo Malilin

This year's TOYCON has over 150 exhibitors-- a smorgasbord of toys, collector’s items, apparel, and high-end collectibles.

Being highlighted is the upcoming movie from DC The Green Lantern. An exhibit and special activities promoting the movie, such as a Green Lantern cosplay contest, toy exhibit, custom art and figures, and kiddie activities like face-painting and scavenger hunt. Also being highlighted is the final installment in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows 2. Original costumes and movie props from previous Harry Potter movies will be on display. Other movies to be highlighted atthe convention are Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Marvel Comics' Captain America.

TOYCON also plays host to the filming of Cosplay Nation, a film about cosplaying produced by Yian Studios. The movie, which features China cosplay celebrities Linda Le, Cheng Yi and the Philippines' Alodia Gosiengfiao, will do its first leg of location shooting in the Philippines at the 10th Philippine TOYCON.

TOYCON will also be the host event for the Asia Cosplay Meet Philippines (ACMP), an international cosplay competition which is the annual qualifier to the Singapore Asia Cosplay Meet finals.  ACMP will determine the best cosplayers of the country who will travel to Singapore on June 25 to 27 and compete with the cosplayers from Singapore, Malaysia and Korea.

By the way, if you don't want to bother with the long line at the ticket booth on Saturday, you can get a ticket in advance at the Megatrade office tomorrow from 12NN to 9PM. They'll be selling 2-day tickets that are limited to only 1,000 pieces at Php 200.00.

Joe Madureira on Avenging SpiderMan!

A Giant Green Lantern Plops Down Outside Glorietta

The giant Green Lantern Logo @ Glorietta

I'm not a huge Green Lantern fan, but seeing this humongous thing made want to recite the oath. Problem is, I don't have it memorized! LOL.

Still, the geek in me is very much excited to watch the Green Lantern on the big screen next week. Speaking of big screens, I saw Thor (in 3D) and X-men First Class. I'll reserve talking about those two for another post. This huge lantern, by the way, is surrounded by small square lanterns that are hanging on tree branches all though out the small park at Glorietta.

Now if only they did something like this for X-men First Class....
